Buckling Behavior of Isogrid Composite Structures Obtained by Fused Deposition Modeling Technique

2020
The Filament Deposition Modeling process was performed to additively manufacture different isogrid structures in reinforced polyamide with 20% in weight of short carbon fibers. Specifically, six different isogrid configurations were 3D printed by changing the rib thickness and rib width of the structures. The isogrid structures were subsequently tested under compression load in order to investigate the effect of geometric parameters on the buckling behavior, in terms of strength and specific strength. It has been observed that, depending on the geometry, isogrid structures exhibit different failure modes due to the global and local buckling. The configurations that are characterized by the highest strength are not the same of those giving the highest specific strength.
