Potential Lessons for Europe from Key Governance Measures

2015
This chapter uses two important governance indexes to understand the extent to which the nation-states of the European Union and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) are congruent or non-congruent with regard to their development of strong rule of law regimes and their ability to curb corruption. Employing the findings provided by the indexes enables us to make policy recommendations regarding the future of the European Union. We first discuss the nature of corruption and the state of the rule of law in Europe, examine the Rule of Law Index of the World Justice Project (WJP) and Transparency International’s (TI’s) Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), and then analyze the findings that those indexes provide.
