A Synchronous Condenser Configuration Method Based on Suppressing Wind Turbine Generators Tripping in the Sending-end Power Grid of HVDC

2020
In the sending-end power grid of HVDC with large-scale wind power integration, aiming at the problem of wind turbine generators tripping caused by transient over-voltage after DC faults, a synchronous condenser (SC) optimal configuration method in the sending-end grid is proposed, which takes into account the control effect and configuration cost. Based on the analysis of the mechanism of wind turbine generators tripping caused by DC faults and the influence of SC on wind turbine generators tripping, firstly, a SC layout model based on the improved reactive-voltage sensitivity is established to determine the installation location of the SC. Secondly, wind turbine generator tripping security margin (WTSM) and the SC configuration cost are introduced to establish the multi-objective optimization model and determine the SC installed capacity. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the configuration method are verified by an actual HVDC and its near-field wind farms.
