The limited streamer tube system of H1

1992
The H1-collaboration at the ep collider HERA at DESY in Hamburg (Germany) installed a limited streamer tube detector to detect particles that penetrate through the main LAr calorimeter. The detector is installed within the iron yoke of the main solenoid magnet. In total 4.000 m[sup 2] of streamer tubes had to be build to cover the whole LAr detector and the magnet coil. Because of safety reasons the chambers are made of a new plastic material called Luranyl' instead of PVC, and are operated with a non-flammable gas mixture of isobuthane, argon, and CO[sub 2]. For the digital readout of the chambers early digitization and pipelining is required because of the ambitious experimental conditions at HERA, requirements also valid for detectors in future collider experiments. The setup of this modern detector system is presented, and the experience of the first months of data-taking is reviewed.
