RECYCLING OF DEMOLITION WASTE TO PRODUCE DURABLE CONCRETE - EXPERIMENTATION IN ORDER TO DIFFUSE USE

1998
The paper describes an experimental investigation carried out to study the characteristics and potential use of recycled concrete aggregate in the manufacture of new concrete. Three types of recycled aggregate were considered, namely, (i) recycled concrete, (ii) debris and (iii) tufa debris. These materials were taken from a demolition material treatment plant and were tested for (i) characterisation of aggregate (grading, density, water absorption, organic matter), (ii) characterisation of concrete with recycled aggregate obtained with normal mix-design and (iii) mix designs of concrete to achieve better mechanical strength. The results, different for each aggregate type, showed a real possibility of making concrete with recycled aggregates and that this concrete may replace concrete made with natural aggregates.
