ON THE EXTREME INDIVIDUALS AND THE RANGE OF SAMPLES TAKEN FROM A NORMAL POPULATION

2016
THE problem of the range of samples arises as a special case of Galton's Difference Problem, first given by Professor K. Pearson in 1902 (1). Together with the allied problem of the extrenme individuals, it has engaged the attention of other writers (2) (3) (4), but a complete solution has not yet been given. This would involve the determination of the distribution of the range and of the extremes for a large number of samplps. Attenmpts are here made in some measure to supply this deficiency.
