Training engineers in computer math and computer–aided design

2014
With the rapid changes in technology today, certain technical courses in universities will be outdated within five years. How can working engineers be kept up–to–date with new knowledge and technology? This is an urgent problem that the School of Engineering at the University of Michigan–Dearborn and the College of Engineering at the University of Toledo are solving through their continuing education programs. This paper describes two successful approaches of how the problem is being addressed at the University of Michigan–Dearborn in close consultation with area industry (notably automobile manufacturers). The first mode is a non–credit semester course 'Math Review for Engineers Using Microcomputers', the second a three–day workshop 'Introduction to Computer–Aided Design (CAD)'.
