Labor Law Practices in EPZ Area: An Impact of RMG Sector in Bangladesh

2013
The Readymade Garment (RMG) industry of Bangladesh has emerged as a competent garment producer in global garment business in recent times. This industry has successfully transformed Bangladesh into an export-oriented economy. Garment exports from Bangladesh began in the late 1970s. As a result of the Multi Fiber Agreement (MFA) and the huge quota allocated to Bangladesh in Dhaka in the 1980s, a completely new industry developed. The textile and apparel sector relies heavily on imports for its production inputs. We have done a survey on the labors of garments in the Dhaka EPZ area. The main purpose of the survey was to investigate about the impact of Readymade Garments (RMG) sector in Bangladesh in labor law practices. This study shows that lower wage for labors, unhealthy working environment, unavailability of childcare facility, indirect communication process etc. are some causes of bad implications of labor law practices in Bangladesh. Poor relationship between workers and supervisors is the main source of conflict. This study also finds that there is growing demand for work life balance among the workers of RMG sector.
