Functional Electromagnetic Surface Design via Complete Interface Field Synthesis

2021
A general design approach for wave-transforming metasurfaces based on complete interface and boundary field synthesis is presented. To the propagating spectral components that define a given wave transformation function in a reflective or transmissive mode, evanescent auxiliary waves are added to every impenetrable boundary and penetrable medium interface. They are optimized such that each interface is characterized by a pointwise passive, lossless surface reactance. Several example metasurface designs characterized by surface reactance distributions are validated using full-wave simulation.
