The Challenges of Design and Constructability. The Library Lane Parking Structure in Ann Arbor, MI

This article discusses the Library Lane Parking Structure, which is part of a redevelopment project that also includes new water mains and electrical supply as well as extensive street improvements. Among other features, the parking structure was designed to accommodate the future construction of a 20-story building, support the existing Fifth Avenue and the new Library Lane roadways, and also to resist 60 ft. of soil loading and building surcharge. The primary goals of this ambitious project included: (1) maximizing below-grade parking; (2) creating a new east-west roadway (Library Lane) to provide a more pedestrian-friendly block; (3) creating a welcoming parking environment—in other words, avoiding the stereotypical below-grade parking experience; and (4) designing for flexibility, including the future options of adding a multi-story building, a public plaza, and below-ground connections to adjacent properties, such as the library.
