Attribute-based Analysis and Visualisation of Market Data: Visualization Challenge Entry

2009
This work was motivated by the eResearch'09 challenge which involves analysis and visualisation of data logs obtained from stock market activities. The data set contains records of 31 companies within six days from 29-Sep-2008 to 4-Oct-2008. The time series data contain no topology since there are no connections between the companies and the activities. A set of analyses were performed in order to classify and gather relevant data such as data of a same company in a same date within a same time interval (e.g., every hour). By applying these analyses on given attributes (e.g., stock price or volume request) and derived attributes (e.g., sale = price * volume), we can compare the stock activities of individual companies throughout the 6-day period. Three layouts have been proposed for visualising the calculated values of companies over date and time. The values (of price, volume and sale) were scaled to 4E-7, 9E-8 and 3E-13, respectively. These values were presented by nodes whose size is correspond to a value after scaling.
