Transformation and invariance in creative translations and analytic interpretations: A Bionian reading of Borges and Cervantes

Bion's basic theory of transformations includes the concept of invariances: those aspects that are kept unchanged in the transformation. Translations are considered transformations that include invariances that allow for the recognition of the transformation. Psychoanalytic interpretations are seen by the author of this paper as a special case of such transformations. From Borges's radically open perspective on translation, psychoanalytic interpretations can be characterized as pertaining to one of three categories: (1) interpretations that change the unfamiliar to the familiar, (2) rigid motion transformations, or (3) interpretations that are transformations towards O. These ideas are dramatized in the reading of two of Borges's fictional stories that present two different approaches to translation, Averroes' search and Pierre Menard, author of the Quixote. These stories exemplify transformations in –K and + K. Finally, Cervantes' intuition of a hybrid language that approaches O and allows for a peaceful and multilayered interpretation of reality (transformation towards O) is discussed. Ubersetzungen werden als Transformationen betrachtet, die Invarianzen beinhalten, anhand deren die Transformation erkennbar wird. Psychoanalytische Deutungen werden von der Verfasserin dieses Beitrags als Sonderfall solcher Transformationen untersucht. Unter Borges' radikal offener Perspektive auf das Ubersetzen lassen sich psychoanalytische Deutungen jeweils einer von drei Kategorien zuordnen: 1) Deutungen, die aus Unvertrautem Vertrautes machen, 2) starre Bewegungstransformationen oder 3) Deutungen, die Transformationen in Richtung O darstellen. Diese Uberlegungen werden anhand der Lekture von zwei Erzahlungen Borges' illustriert, die zwei unterschiedliche Verstandnisweisen der Ubersetzung enthalten: „Averroes auf der Suche” und „Pierre Menard, Autor des Quijote”. Diese Erzahlungen sind beispielhafte Illustrationen von Tranformationen in –K und +K. Abschliesend wird Cervantes' Intuition einer Hybridensprache, die sich O annahert und eine friedvolle und vielschichtige Interpretation der Realitat (Transformation in Richtung O) zulasst, erortert. Se considera que las traducciones son transformaciones que incluyen invariancias que dejan espacio para el reconocimiento de la transformacion. La autora considera la interpretacion psicoanalitica como un caso especial de dichas transformaciones. Desde la perspectiva radicalmente abierta de Borges sobre la traduccion, las interpretaciones psicoanaliticas pueden pertenecer a una de estas tres categorias: 1) interpretaciones que cambian de lo no familiar a lo familiar; 2) transformaciones rigidas, o 3) interpretaciones que son transformaciones hacia O. Estas ideas son dramatizadas en la lectura de dos cuentos de Borges que presentan dos diferentes aproximaciones a la traduccion: “La busca de Averroes” y “Pierre Menard, autor del Quijote”. Estos cuentos ejemplifican transformaciones en −K y +K. Por ultimo, se discute la intuicion de Cervantes de un lenguaje hibrido que se acerca a O y permite interpretaciones pacificas de multiples niveles de realidad (transformaciones hacia O). Una traduzione e essenzialmente una trasformazione che contiene invarianze, le quali consentono di riconoscere la trasformazione. L'Autrice considera l'interpretazione psicoanalitica come un caso speciale di tali transformazioni. Prendendo le mosse dalla concezione radicalmente aperta di traduzione proposta da Borges, e possible individuare tre tipi di interpretazione psicoanalitica: 1) l'interpretazione che muta il non-familiare in familiare 2) l'interpetazione-trasformazione del tipo mozione rigida, 3) l'interpretazione che consiste in una trasformazione verso O. Queste idee si ritrovano nella narrativa di due racconti di Borges che presentano due diversi esiti di traduzione: ‘la ricerca di Averroes’ e ‘Pierre Menard, autore del Chisciotte’. Quersti racconti esemplificano rispettivamente transformazioni in –K e in + K. Si considera infine l'intuizione di Cervantes sul linguaggio ibrido che consentirebbe di avvicinarsi a O e di interpretare la realtain modo armonioso basandosi su molteplici livelli (transformazioni verso O).
