Preschoolers Developing Mathematical Understanding through Computer-Based Activities

2005
Educators' role in creating a mathematical learning environment for children is vital and extremely difficult; since the development of mathematical understandings in an early age is considered to be critical. The main purpose of the current research work is to examine the development and implementation of math activities designed to develop preschoolers' mathematical understanding; through the use of technology as a tool to prepare and deliver the exercises. In order to address the above, a case study design was applied. Qualitative data were collected through interviews with kindergarten teachers. Teachers used computer technology as a tool to prepare and deliver their math activities. Teachers' reported their experiences related to implementing computer technology for four months in the kindergarten classrooms. Specifically, they discussed various problems/barriers revealed throughout the implementation as well as students' reactions, math knowledge and skills developed through these activities
