Studies on pollen viability and stigma receptivity of Chinese rose varieties: Yunfen and Yunmei.

2010
Pollen viability and life-span of cut Chinese roses varieties Yunfen and Yunmei were evaluated by TTC.The stigma receptivity was estimated by benzidine-H2O2.The development of stigma's modality and color was observed by microscope.Hand-pollination in the field was also adopted to study the fertility in Chinese rose. The results showed:1.The pollen germination rate was higher than 50% in four days after shedding pollens and reduced to six percent at the tenth day.2.The stigma of Yunfen kept high receptivity for more than 3 days, while Yunmei lasted less than 2 days. The best receptible time of Yunfen was much longer than that of Yunfen.3 In field crossing, the hip setting was higher than 70% when Yunfen was the female parent. The hip setting differed much from the male parent. As for Yunmei, there were few hips gotten when it was used as either female or male parent. The result of this experiment will provide a scientific basis for varieties of roses which have been protected in China to be used in cross-breeding.
