In the last decade, efforts have been made in Canada to identify with more accuracy than before, the maintenance requirements of Canadian bridges. A simple step by step procedure is utilized to establish a bridge evaluation code. The safety index is identified as a function of the expected behaviour of a member and the consequences of its failure. Load factors reflect the confidence with which the loads can be predicted.
