A Study of Emergency Response and Rescue Strategies for Road Tunnel Fires

2008
Road tunnel fire usually presents high temperature, heat and intensive smoke, and obstructs users' evacuation and fire fighters' suppression activities.Sequentially,it will cause great casualties and impact the economics of the country. In this study,it aims to understand whether the Hsuehshan tunnel's fire safety systems are sufficient to protect the tunnel environment in fire incidents, and to collect and analyse the codes and new studies of the United States,Australia, the Europe an countries and Japan. In addition,FDS is used to predict the effects of ceiling sprinklers for the evacuation environment of tunnels in the event of a bus fire.At last, this paper suggests that a full-scale road tunnel fire test must be performed immediately to know the characteristics of the scene of a fire in the tunnel. At the same time, the capability and reliability of fire-fighting equipment in the tunnel, such as fire suppression systems, escape route signs and ventilation systems, are also evaluated.
