Women’s rights in italy: From the constituent assembly to current challenges

2021
This essay enquires the troublesome implementation of women’s constitutional rights in Italy, setting out its milestones from the Constitutional drafting to the present day. Firstly, the essay highlights the historical role of the 21 women who were members of the Constituent Assembly: their political profile and their contributions in designing an equal democracy, made by women and men. Secondly, it examines the historical obstacles to a full implementation of the constitutional equality, focusing on some of the most important decisions of the Italian Constitutional Court. Finally, the essay enquires some of the current challenges to full gender equality, exploring the actual barriers to the women’s political and institutional representation, also during the pandemic crisis, and focusing on the opportunities offered by the Recovery Plan. © 2021, Tipolito Subalpina.
