Wirelessly Powered Medical Implants via Radio Frequency

2020
In the past decade, advances in wireless technology have revolutionized the field of mobile devices and electronics. However, the utilization of wireless power delivery for implantable biomedical devices is yet to have reached its full potential. Wireless power transfer (WPT) in these devices can not only help reduce health risks in existing devices but also pave the way for the rise of new technologies. WPT faces challenges in providing long-term power to a device over a sufficient range while avoiding tissue energy absorption and heating. This is made especially difficult within anatomical constraints and potential for motion-induced variations in displacement and alignment between a transmitter and receiver. In this chapter, we will discuss some of the endeavors of current technologies for wireless power transfer using radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation.
