An investigation of the use of modulus measurements to detect stress corrosion cracking in 304 stainless steel

1983
Abstract An investigation to determine the usefulness of continuous modulus measurements in the detection and study of stress corrosion cracking has been carried out. Modulus measurements were made using a modified composite piezoelectric oscillator with a specially designed sample. Samples of 304 stainless steel were tested in different environmental solutions. Results indicated a good correlation between stress corrosion cracking and a decrease in modulus.
