Observing the ground surface deformation before and after Taiwan Chichi earthquake by JERS 1 and ERS 2 differential SAR analysis

A strong earthquake of magnitude M/sub L/7.3, struck Chichi, Taiwan. 2332 people were killed and 10002 injured. The on-site investigation and GPS researches showed there is rupture along the Chelunpu Fault which is aligned in the south-north direction. The western plate was displaced downward and eastward, while the eastern plate was displaced upward and westward. The maximum horizontal displacement is 8.5 meters, and maximum vertical shift is 3.2 meters. The authors use three JERS 1 SAR data before the earthquake to try to analyse the pre-earthquake deformation in the area. They also processed two pairs of ERS 2 SAR data to map the ground surface deformation after the earthquake.
