Assessment for learning: Using Moodle quizzes in mathematics

The introduction of online, interactive computer marked assessments within a distance taught foundational mathematics module is discussed. The aim of the assessments is to encourage and support learning. The style of assessment used is described together with details of their development and how they are integrated within the module teaching strategy. Data showing how the assessments were used by students on the first presentation of the module are given, together with some student feedback and issues encountered. Although the uptake of these assessments was not as great as hoped, the student experience has been generally positive.
