Monitoring projects around the world are demonstrating that the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater can uncover both incidence trends and new variants before they become apparent in the clinic. A more systematic use of the methodology could also help fight other diseases and avert pandemics in the future. Michael Gross reports.
