“De padrones a censos”. Fuentes sociodemográficas para el estudio de la población de Veracruz (1777-1921)

espanolEl objetivo de este articulo es exponer diferentes fuentes de informacion que cuantificaron a la poblacion de Veracruz entre 1777 y 1921, correspondientes a tres periodos de la historia mexicana, cuyas caracteristicas responden a los diferentes momentos politicos y a la necesidad de estadisticas marcada por estos. La importancia que dichas estimaciones representan para la demografia historica es que constituyen el unico material con el que se cuenta para determinar el crecimiento de la poblacion entre dichos periodos. Este trabajo responde a la pregunta de cual fue el discurso o motivo que valido una estimacion de la poblacion, y a partir de este hecho, ponerla a consideracion, sea para estudios de historia social o especificamente de demografia historica. El trabajo se estructura cronologicamente a partir de la descripcion de las fuentes de informacion de fines del siglo XVIII, principalmente los padrones de poblacion de la epoca de las reformas borbonicas, hasta el siglo XX, cuando se efectua el cuarto censo nacional de 1921. EnglishThe aim of this article is to expose different sources of information that quantified the population of Veracruz between 1777 and 1921, corresponding to three periods of Mexican history, whose characteristics respond to the different political moments and the need for statistics marked by them. The importance of these estimates for historical demography is that they are the only material available to determine population growth between these periods. This paper answers the question of what was the discourse or motive that validated an estimation of the population, and from this fact, put it for consideration, either for studies of social history or specifically of historical demography. The work is chronologically structured from the description of the information sources of the end of the eighteenth century, mainly the population census of the time of the Bourbon reforms, until the 20th century, when the fourth national census was carried out in 1921.
