An Energy Efficient Control Algorithm for Parallel Pumping Industrial Motor Drives System

Globally, energy consumption increases drastically over the past decades, due to the development of commercial and industrial utilities. Improving energy efficiency of the major energy consumption utilities will reduce the demand significantly. Pumping system contributes the largest energy consumption of about 30% across the world’s energy consumption. This article presents the control algorithm that enhances cascade control pumping system efficiency. The proposed control technique predicts the optimum speed reference that maintains the cascade system pump efficiency maximum at all operating conditions. It enables the pumps to operate in the best efficiency point throughout its operating range and reduces the greenhouse gas emission. The performance of the proposed control algorithm is simulated and verified using an experimental prototype that proves to be best solution for cascade control of pumps.
