Course design and practices of teaching undergraduate's database system

This paper describes the course design and practices in teaching undergraduate’s database system (DBS) to software engineering (SE) and digital media engineering (DME) students at the software school of Xiamen University, China. Although the majority teaching objectives of DBS are the same for SE and DME students, there exist minor emphasis differences between them. How to achieve their respective goals under the unified teaching framework is a meaningful challenge. In our course design, by introducing advanced (graduate-level) materials to SE and multimedia database technology materials to DME, all the students can not only obtain the deep understanding of the database system concepts, but also master the solid practical development skills related to their specific areas.
