Human-Machine Interface Research of Autonomous Vehicles Based on Cognitive Work Analysis Framework

2020
This article deals with human-machine (HMI) interface design of autonomous vehicles. Due to the limitations of the current autonomous driving technologies, drivers are also required to participate in some driving tasks, which leads to a lot of challenges in the human-machine interface (HMI) design of autonomous vehicles, especially when drivers are using in-vehicle information systems (IVIS) or mobile devices. This paper presents a methodology aiming to solve these challenges. The method relies on the Cognitive Work Analysis framework and mainly using the example of vehicle to driver handover phase to identify and to organize information that should be displayed to minimize distraction and maximize safety benefits. Finally, some practical HMI design principles of autonomous vehicles are provided.
