Dental paleopathology in a mediaeval skeletal sample: necropolis of "El Barrejo" (León, Spain)

The aim of this study is to present and discuss the results of a research about paleopathological conditions in the dentition of a mediaeval skeletal sample (12th-13th centuries) from a mountainous and isolated place in Leon, NW of Spain. The sample comprises 403 permanent teeth and 417 dental sockets of 20 adult individuals. They were examined for the following categories of dental condition: antemortem or postmortem tooth loss, caries, linear enamel hipoplasia, dental wear, calculus and fistulas. The results of these dental diseases are compared with other skeletal series, of similar chronological and geographical context, to improve out knowledge about life conditions and/or health status, in mediaeval propulations in the North of Spain.
