Expert systems, a tool for autonomous underwater vehicles

The need for guidance and control of an unmanned untethered underwater automaton calls for a knowledge-based expert as pilot. The paper considers the expert system in a time-constrained environment. It concludes that substantial improvements in reliability, in performance of the mission, in coping with unexpected events should be achievable with onboard microcomputer capabilities. 10 references.
