Tobacco Products in Japan Including a History of Heated Tobacco Products

2021
The Japanese word tabako (“tobacco”) is used to mean a conventional cigarette. The term tabako has become so common that most people today are unfamiliar with the original Japanese word for cigarette, which was kami-maki tabako, or “paper-rolled tobacco,” whereas almost all Japanese are familiar with the major cigarette brands: Seven Stars, Mevius (previously Mild Seven), and Marlboro. But recently a new type of tobacco product has taken the Japanese tobacco market by storm—specifically heated tobacco and e-cigarettes. In this book, I will refer to both of these as “new tobacco products” but will focus particularly on HTPs.
