Understanding When and How the Dark Side of Leadership is Destructive

Destructive forms of leadership are detrimental to followers, organizations and leaders themselves. This phenomenon concerns both researchers and practitioners as they struggle to understand factors that amplify or attenuate these negative consequences. This symposium aims to accomplish two objectives. First, we explore leader and follower boundary conditions that accentuate or attenuate the impact of abusive supervision on follower outcomes. Second, we illuminate follower perceptions, attitudes, motivations and cognitions as mediating mechanisms linking abusive supervision to deleterious follower outcomes. Taken together, this symposium contributes to the dark side of leadership literature by explaining when the negative impact of abusive supervision is more or less pernicious as well as the processes through which abusive supervision impacts followers attitudes and behaviors.
