Effect of Mn in new β titanium alloy Ti-6Nb-6Mo on corrosion behavior and mechanical properties

2020
In this study, the development of new β titanium alloys is carried out. However, due to ion release of Al and V elements in Ti-6Al-4V alloy can cause health problems such as Alzheimer and peripheral neuropathy because they are toxic. Besides, Young’s modulus of Ti-6Al-4V medical implants is relatively higher than Young’s modulus of human bones, so that it can cause stress shielding effect phenomenon. Al and V elements are replaced with Nb and Mo elements which are not toxic. Then, the low-cost Mn elements were added with variations of 2, 4 and 6 wt% Mn to substitute Nb and Mo which included relatively expensive elements. Nb, Mo, and Mn elements are β phase stabilizers, which have a Young’s modulus lower than Ti- 6Al-4V. The material characterization was performed Corrosion Test, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), optical microscope (OM), and Vickers Hardness. The corrosion rate, hardness, and modulus elasticity were measured between two alloy of Ti-6Nb-6Mo-(x) Mn and Ti-6Al-4V. The results of this study indicate with the addition of 6 wt%Mn exhibits the lowest corrosion rate, hardness, and Young’s modulus and compared to Ti-6Al-4V alloy. A corrosion rate of 2,04 x 10−2 mmpy, hardness of 300 HV and Young’s modulus of 100 GPa were obtained for 6 wt% Mn.
