Periodismo, derecho a la información y libertad de expresión: horizontes de investigación, docencia e incidencia desde el Departamento de Comunicación

The Universidad Iberoamericana Ciudad de Mexico has played a fundamental role in taking part of the great transformations, but also in pointing at the setbacks and challenges with respect to freedom of the press, access to public information and the quality of journalism in the country. There are key areas of social impact–namely journalism education, life-long learning and training for working journalists, journalism and media research, as well as our close links with social and industry sectors—from which our Department of Communications has managed to actively contribute to discuss and impact the great challenges posed to press freedom, information access and quality journalism in Mexico. First, this article offers an overview of the research topics and work agendas that have shaped our faculty’s interests throughout recent decades in accordance to societal concerns on those pressing issues. Second, it summarises the specific strategies and initiatives developed in our Department of Communications in the aforementioned areas, all of which have helped consolidate our University’s expertise, prestige, and reputation.
