The inhibitory effect of trehalose on electrical activity in the glandular lobe of in vitro corpus cardiacum of Locusta migratoria

1987
Abstract 1. 1. Administration of trehalose to the bathing medium has an inhibitory influence on spontaneously active units in the corpus cardiacum (CC) of Locusta migratoria both in isolated head and in isolated CC preparations. 2. 2. Most units stopped firing in the presence of high concentrations of the disaccharide. After decreasing the concentration—by dilution with saline-activity resumed. 3. 3. Sucrose evoked the same effect as trehalose, proline, however, failed to change unit activity. 4. 4. It is suggested that in vivo the active units facilitate synaptic transmission between secretomotor cells and the adipokinetic hormone producing glandular cells in the CC.
