Overview of Current Robotic Technology

2021
Robotic technology has accelerated the modernization and integration into the healthcare field. Robotic machinery was first developed in the third century BC and for the amusement of wealthy ancient Grecians. Continued advancements through the Industrial Revolution and World War II laid the foundation for the first surgical robotic system. Throughout the last four decades, robotic surgical technology has transformed from initial neurosurgical biopsies to single-port and endoscopic functions. A number of FDA-approved platforms are currently in use including da Vinci surgical system, Senhance, Hugo, FlexⓇ robotic system, Invendoscopy E210 system, and the NeoGuide Colonoscope. Other emerging robotic platforms which are awaiting FDA clearance include MiroSurge, Sport™ Surgical System, Versius Robotic System, miniaturized in vivo robotic assistant (MIRA), and the STRAS i-Cube. Future directions include continued development for improved maneuverability, vision, and safety in a cost-effective manner. Current robotic technology paves the way for the modernization and advancement of cutting edge medicine.
