This study characterizes the family farm production systems in the communities of California and Vila Sao Joao dos Cacos in the city of Capanema, Para, Brazil, in order to enhance the knowledge and experience of these social groups on plants and their uses. 14 residents between men and women were interviewed using semi-structured questionnaires. The botanical material collected was deposited in the Herbario MFS / Universidade do Estado do Para. There were 58 species belonging to 36 families. Asteraceae and Lamiaceae were the most cited. The three identified categories of use were medicinal, food and cultural. It was observed that there is between the communities a high cultivation of medicinal and food plants index that characterizes the need for subsistence farming due to the lack of government assistance.
