A CHECK-LIST OF THE BOOKS IN THE ALTSCHUL COLLECTION

2016
NOTE: Limitations of time and space have made it impossible, with only a few exceptions, to include names of printers and engravers unless these are given on the title page, and to catalogue in detail, beyond the title page description, the illustrations and (especially) the various extra proofs present in most of the Altschul copies. (These deserve and will eventually receive much more extensive treatment.) No attempt has been made to describe the special bindings, but the name of the binder is given in small capital letters, usually as the final item in the entry for the particular book. (Most of the books for which no binder's name is given are either as indicated in original wrappers, or in halfor three-quarter morocco or slip-cases by Macdonald of New York.) The size of a clothor leather-bound book is that of the binding; for paperbound books or unbound sheets, the dimensions of the leaves or wrappers are given. Four indexes of last names are to be found at the end of this check-list: (i) Artists, Engravers, etc., pp. 96-97; (2) Authors, Translators, Editors, etc., pp. 98-100; (3) Binders, pp. 100-101; and (4) Publishers, Printers, etc., pp. 101102.
