The effects of team familiarity on team coordination errors

2018
A team is a basic unit of contemporary organizations that perform their job with high uncertainty. A team is a collection of individuals who are interdependent in their tasks and who share responsibility for outcomes. Team coordination is a necessary condition for the successful completion of emergency work or fast- paced tasks, and team coordination errors may harm organizational performance. This study explores the relationship between team familiarity and team errors and examines longitudinal data on Chinese Professional Baseball League teams from 1990 to 2016. The empirical results show that both shared team experience and team composition stability have significant negative effects on team errors and that team errors are negatively associated with team performance. This study clarifies the relationship between team familiarity and team coordination and extends our understanding of team errors. This study also provides relevant theoretical and practical implications of the empirical results.
