Hydrocarbons in Hungary - Exploration and development

Nearly 80 per cent of Hungary's 93 000 km2 national territory lies within the oil and/or gas bearing area. Since the first discovery in 1937 136 oil and gas fields have been discovered. Sixtysix per cent of recoverable reserves are found in the Tertiary sediments and 34% in karstified Mesozoic and fractured Palaeozoic Formations.
