Muscle enzyme activities after repeated ischemia

1974
Abstract 1. 1. The effects of ischemia on the activities of hexokinase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, phosphofructokinase, pyruvate kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, glycerolphosphate dehydrogenase, glutamate dehydrogenase, fumarase and cytochrome oxidase as well as the glycogen content were investigated in gastrocnemius muscle of the rat. 2. 2. Decreased activities of phosphofructokinase, pyruvate kinase and lactate dehydrogenase, together with increased glycogen content, were found the day after one ischemic period. 3. 3. The activities of the glycolytic enzymes returned to normal the day after five days of repeated ischemia, as did the glycogen content. Moreover hexokinase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase now showed increased activities.
