Using Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and a VLE to Promote Independent Learning

2015
The emergence of Foundation Degrees (FdA) in 2000 created a vehicle for work based qualifications which facilitated the needs those working in schools as Teaching Assistants (TA) to gain higher qualifications (Blackie 2006). In developing appropriate modules for a Foundation Degree in Learning Support consideration was given to the delivery and assessment methods. As part of this process the use of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) was employed and delivery of module content explored. Reflecting on the work of McLinden et al (2006) and in consultation the development of a Problem Based Learning (PBL) scenario was employed for a module exploring the support of additional needs in schools. This module is delivered within the main HEI and partner institutions, and has enabled the team to reflect on the use of PBL and the use of the VLE, and evaluate the process and teaching strategies employed. The teaching strategies employed challenge the traditional teaching methods and in doing so challenge the students thinking. In developing the module both Moodle and Blackboard have been used and have provided a discussion of different interfaces and how this impacts on student’s engagement.
