Developing Basic Criteria in Halal Food Security: An Overview from Islamic Perspectives

Food security is critical to the survival of the human being. Halal food safety, security and sustainability are a right for all human beings and should not withhold from anyone in this world. Besides, in the World Food Summit in 1996, the food security was defined as, “food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food which meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life”. Since the concept of halal food security, is less explored compared to the food security in general, therefore, the main objective of this concept paper is to identify the basic criteria of halal food security from the Islamic perspectives. This study employs a library research methodology in which the data are sought from classical and modern books, journal articles, authoritative websites and any other articles that deem fit for this study. Thereafter, the collected data is analyzed using the content analysis technique. The result of this study further proposes the basic criteria for readers in understanding halal food security from Islamic perspectives
