Co-Sputtered Mg x Zn (1-x) O window layers for CdTe (1-x) Se x solar cells

2018
CdTe (1-x) Se x solar cells using a MgxZn (1-x) O window layer have been fabricated with varying amounts of Mg content in the films. Co-sputtering from ZnO and MgO targets allows for fine control of the Mg content in the films. The band gap of ZnO is found to increase Iinearly with Mg content and the material maintains a single hexagonal phase up to a 20% by weight Mg content. Mg content >20% leads to the formation of separate ZnO and MgO phases within the film. Incorporating Mg into the ZnO films was found to have a detrimental effect on device performance, although the $V_{oc}$ does significantly improve. The decrease in performance most likely due to the increased resistivity of the MZO films, device performance will likely be improved by increasing the films conductivity.
