Bi adsorption on Ni(100)

1991
Abstract The adsorption of Bi on a Ni(100) surface m the coverage range from 4 × 10 14 atoms/cm 2 to 1.2 × 10 16 atoms/cm 2 (1 monolayer of Ni(100) equals 1.61 × 10 15 atoms/cm 2 ) has been studied by means of transmission channeling, high-energy ion scattering and Auger electron spectroscopy. For a coverage of ~ 8 × 10 14 atoms/cm 2 the Bi forms an ordered overlayer with a c(2 × 2) LEED pattern and for this phase we have determined the adsorption site to be the fourfold hollow position at a height of 2.05 ± 0.10 A. The growth at higher Bi coverages is discussed with respect to either alloy formation or Stranski-Krastanov growth.
