In human and experimental diabetic pregnancy there is an increased risk of congenital malformation in the offspring. Some malformations involve growth retardation and altered chondrocyte differentiation, suggesting that a diabetic milieu may modify embryonic cell replication and the development of (pre)chondrocytes.
