Clues to the Cell-Specific Synthesis of Complex Carbohydrates
1993
Important functions such as cell adhesion and cell recognition depend on complex carbohydrates (glycans) whose structures are remarkably diverse. Glycans are synthesized by specific glycosyltransferases. Their expression and topogenesis to the proper Golgi subcompartment, availability of sugar nucleotides, and undisturbed intracellular traffic are critical factors of cell-specific glycosylation.
