The discovery and study on homeotic mutant male sterile line HGMS of nonheading Chinese-cabbage

2005
Homeotic mutation male sterile material was discovered from the high generation selfing materials of nonheading Chinese-cabbage and homeotic Gms (HGMS) was bred. HGMS is a new type of GMS, which sterile identity appeared as ectopic expression of carpel on stamen, and stamen vanished, and bisexual flower changed into unisexual flower without stamen and its carpeloid stamen with some ovules. The sterile line's petals degenerate obviously, and their length and width shortened, weight lightened. And its pistil changed from slim to thickset, and weight increased. The result of isoenzyme analysis also showed that band of esterase and POD of carpeloid organ were consistent with itself pistil's. It is indicated that the mutation sterile identity was caused by carpel ectopic expression. According to ABC model of flower development, it was supposed that the mutantion is caused possibly by loss of B gene.
