Kinetics and mechanism of oxidation of 2-hydroxyacetanilide by chloramine-T in HCL medium.

2013
The oxidation kinetics of 2-Hydroxyacetanilide (HA) by sodium N-chloro p-toluenesulfonamide (CAT) in hydrochloric acid medium has been studied at 303K. The reaction stoichiometry was determined and oxidation products were identified. The reaction rate shows a first order dependence on (CAT) and fractional order on (HA) whereas inverse fractional order on (H + ). The products of reaction and dielectric constant have no considerable effect on the rate. The rate remains same with the variation in the ionic strength of the medium indicating the involvement of non ionic species in rate determining step. There were no free radicals during the course of reaction. Thermodynamic parameters were computed by performing the kinetic runs at different temperatures. A mechanism consistent with observed parameters is proposed and rate law is derived. Keywords: Kinetics, Chloramine-T, Oxidation, 2-Hydroxyacetanilide, Mechanism, Rate law.
