Pilot and full-scale assesment of waste sludge production for different innovative biological process configurations treating potato processing wastewater

2007
Sludge production from various full-scale and pilot-scale innovative anaerobic and aerobic processes are compared while treating the same wastewater from a potato processing plant in Prince Edward Island, Canada. High-rate activated sludge processes utilize heat from aeration and biological activity, plus the effects of high shear conditions, to decrease sludge production versus more conventional (and lower loaded) activated sludge processes, despite operating at low solids retention times (SRT’s). Sludge production data from the full-scale lowrate ADI-BVF anaerobic reactor and biological nitrogen removal systems are provided.
