For biopsies under continuous sonographic and visual control, there are three different ways in which real-time monitoring can be accomplished, depending on how the needle is oriented with respect to the ultrasound beam or the imaging plane of the transducer. The old practice of using a static scanner with a perforated biopsy transducer is too imprecise and is now considered obsolete.
