Studies on Variations Induced by Alkylating Agent DMS on Vegetative and Yield Traits in Chicory (Cichoriumintybus L.)

2010
The seeds of cichorium intybus L. were subjected to six different doses of DMS (0.02%, 0.04%, 0.06%, 0.08%, 0.1% and 0.2%) in order to enhance medicinal value of chicory. A dose dependent decrease in mean values for seed germination, survival and pollen fertility was observed in M1 generation. The mean values for number of flowers, seed weight, and yield showed a progressive increase with the increasing concentration of mutagen. Root length and root weight, showed a slight increase in the mean values comparable to control at higher concentrations. Since both shoots and roots of the plant are economically important, therefore DMS can be used effectively for the induction of morphological variations in chicory.
